For years I’ve been on a mission to improve veterinary workplaces through a focus on leadership and culture. Why? Because for too long, burnout and toxicity have just been accepted as part of the job, but these cause untold harm to our staff that drives them out of the profession and lets down the patients we aim to provide care for. We are failing our staff and can all do much better.
But the truth is we don’t really have a clear idea of exactly how happy our staff actually are. No-one has ever produced any real data for this in the veterinary field. No benchmarks exist to compare our individual practices against to judge whether we’re doing things well.
In 2021 I published a study into the actions of leadership on practice performance, staff retention and patient care and it was a game changer for many practices. You can get a copy here.
Now I’m launching a new study to measure employee engagement across as many veterinary practices in the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia and create some sound data-led insight into staff satisfaction so we can drive some real change.

How does it work?
The Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) is a simple yet powerful metric that measures how likely your team members are to recommend your practice as a great place to work. It’s a standard measure used in many other industries but one that we often ignore in ours.
A strong eNPS score is linked to:

By understanding your eNPS, you gain clear, actionable insights into your workplace culture—helping you address challenges before they become bigger problems.
Our survey uses 13 set questions to generate a score for your team. Knowing your score will give you a measure to work on and something to compare against in future to see if you are improving matters for your team. Without this measure we are all just fumbling in the dark.
